As of 2022, approximately 1.2 million people in Queensland—or nearly 23% of the population—are living with a disability. Among them, around 435,700 have a profound or severe disability requiring daily assistance with core activities like mobility, communication, or self-care. Disability rates increase significantly with age, and about 36% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders report having a disability or long-term health condition. These figures highlight the importance of inclusive services and support systems to ensure all Queenslanders can participate fully in their communities.
A 2023 report revealed that 78% of disability service providers in Queensland found it extremely or moderately difficult to recruit support workers, highlighting a widespread workforce gap.
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Workforce Plan has estimated that an additional 83,000 workers are needed across Australia to meet growing demand.
